In Maya Angelou Poem Still I Rise, it gives hope to everyone to Still Rise, even when we have been through our toughest journey.
When I need a lift up in life, l go right into her poem.
Will you join me in remembering that:
You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I’ll rise.
Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? ‘Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells Pumping in my living room.
Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I’ll rise.
Did you want to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes? Shoulders falling down like teardrops, Weakened by my soulful cries?
Does my haughtiness offend you? Don’t you take it awful hard ‘Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines Diggin’ in my own backyard.
You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I’ll rise.
Does my sexiness upset you? Does it come as a surprise That I dance like I’ve got diamonds At the meeting of my thighs?
Out of the huts of history’s shame I rise Up from a past that’s rooted in pain I rise I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide, Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear I rise Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear I rise Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise I rise I rise.
Soak in the vibe of her words remembering, never to give up not matter what you are going through.
Lest we forget. All we are is divine. Let’s use our wisdom, understanding and skills unto the Lord and be the change we want to see in this world. Let us not bury what has been given to us freely.
We are given Divine qualifications to do the divine will of God. We are wise to contrive, diligent to execute, and able also to teach and help others.
We all have distinguished abilities, zeal, and knowledge, wisdom, to truly fulfill our calling and life purpose at any level.
Whatever we have learnt in school or anywhere else, if we are not using the skills, knowledge, understanding, truth to bring solutions, help people, speak truth, teach others, co-create then we become as useless as the candle under a bushel.
God’s Spirit wants to flow through us as rivers of living water (John 7:38). We must believe this, and as the days darken we must learn to be His voice and speak His truth!
The broken places need repairing. Nations are in turmoil, evil is rampant, people are discouraged and frightened. We can stand in the gap and bring healing to the earth as we are God’s voice of hope and life. We can help destroy the works of evil and rebuild, repair, and restore through our prayers.
Psalm 29:3-9. The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is majestic. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.
1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.
By Janet Kalulu Ngombalu
My mind goes back in time to my childhood when my siblings and I would get into an argument or fight and could not wait for mama to get home so that I could tell on them. I am nostalgic at the after – effect – the feeling of joy and relief after having cast all my burdens on mama……. Yes! that Baam feeling!!!, That excitement of “I got you”!! Well, that is what I call Casting Therapy.
Think along with me, do you remember catching someone right-handed on a little nasty act and you couldn’t wait to tell on them? Remember how you felt after releasing it all and letting it out of your mind? Baam!! The effect of letting it all out is what I like to call my CastingTherapy!
Take another walk with me down memory lane, do you remember a time when someone really hurt your feelings, broke your heart, or trampled on your soul, but you felt that as an adult, you had one to tell? Do you sometimes feel sad and have no one to tell, no one to speak to? Well, if you have felt these familiar feelings of hurt, anger, sadness, and despair, and still haven’t found a way out, then sit with me a while as I take you through my self-discovered anecdote – The CastingTherapy!
My Casting Therapy is nothing new, and is based on the theory that a problem spoken, is a problem half solved. That’s the Baam!! the feeling of temporary win or victory when you let out your hurt to someone else and feel protected, safe, redeemed, and that justice is served. That’s what am talking about.
However, as an adult, especially when you are in authority, who do you go to feel heard, redeemed, vindicated, protected, loved, forgiven, rewarded? Who do you tell about the people who hurt you? In such times, my little secret, is the Casting Therapy.
Casting Therapy is based on the comfort of knowing that no matter what happens, you have a friend, closer than a brother, sister, mother, father, friend, who you can always go to when you feel hurt and he can take care of your fears. 1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
I am reminded of the Words of one of my favourite songs by Twila Paris, the Wounded Warrior…
“They don’t know that
I go running home when I fall down
They don’t know Who picks me
Up when no one is around
I drop my sword and cry for just a while
‘Cause deep inside this armor
The warrior is a child”
Yes, that is my Therapy. I go straight onto the loving arms of my Father God. I go right there and tell on anyone and everything that bothers or hurts me. I tell Him and leave it all at the feet of Jesus. And then thrive on my Baam!! feeling. My Casting Therapy.
This is my go-to place where I find solace, relief, vindication, protection, and I move on with life knowing, God’s got this.
Other ways to use Casting therapy.
1. Write out a letter to Dear God..and let it all out. ….cast your cares to the Lord.
2. Go to the altar of God and tell it all. – come to me all who are weary
3. Close the doors of your car and let it all out..l am with you till the end
4. Cry out your hurts to God anywhere anytime. No formula.
Try it someday. Encourage children to apply this strategy, when they feel hurt, and are scared to be labeled snitches. Assure them, that once the matter is in God’s hands, God’s got it!!
Hope one day, l will scientifically study it and get a doctorate on this, but meanwhile, let my heart remain at peace. – However, this is a biblically ordained therapy truth. Use, it often.
